Wagner’s Ring Cycle to adopt country twang in ‘Das Barbecü’ musical comedy
A show that spins Wagner’s Ring Cycle as a witty Texas fable with five actors playing more than 30 outrageous characters at breakneck speed is about to enjoy its regional premiere at the Jedlicka Performing Arts Center in Cicero. “Das Barbecü,” a musical comedy opening Friday, Jan. 18, is directed by Micheal Kott of Carol Stream.
“Das Barbecü” is a musical with book and lyrics by Jim Luigs and music by Scott Warrender. Songs run the gamut from Broadway to Texas swing, from jazz to twangy country and western. The action is set smack dab in the middle of Texas, complete with a singin’ cowboy named Seigfried, a honky-tonk bar called Hagen’s Hideaway, and a gaudy Versailles-style palace named Valhalla Ranch.
The cast features Emily Goldberg of Oak Park, Dylan McGill of Aurora, and Drew Longo, Kristin Lutzeier and Morgan Briggs, all of Chicago.
Organizers promise audience members are in for a rare treat, calling it a wild bronco ride of a musical comedy, which Variety proclaimed would “leave your sides aching from laughter.”
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays from Jan. 18 to Feb. 2 at the Jedlicka Performing Arts Center, 3801 S. Central Ave. Visit www.jpactheatre.com.
