Children on icy pond found safe after police respond

DOWNERS GROVE — A report of two children possibly falling into an icy pond brought out the Downers Grove police and a rescue dive team Sunday evening, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Police received a report of two children playing on Prince Lake at Franklin Street and Linscott Avenue, northwest of the downtown, about 4:30 p.m. The pond was frozen but known to have soft spots.

When police arrived, no one was on the ice, and an unattended scooter was found nearby, said Downers Grove police Sgt. David Bormann.

The dive team was called out as a precaution while police canvassed the area, Bormann said. Thanks to a witness, police were able to locate the two children at home before the dive team entered the water.

"We confirmed the kids were alive and well," Bormann said.
