College Board Names 12 from York High School as national AP Scholars

Twelve York Community High School were named National Advanced Placement Scholars this month. The top recognition is earned by averaging a grade of 4, on a 5-point scale, on all AP exams taken by the student, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams.

In May, 670 York Community High School students took a total of 1,239 AP tests, with 89.7 percent of those tests resulting in a score of 3 or above (on a 5-point scale), providing 605 students with college credit, advanced placement or both. Many students took multiple AP tests. A total of 178 York students earned 190 awards in four categories.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school.

More than 90 percent of colleges and universities across the U.S. accept a score of 3 or above on an AP Exam – which can potentially save families thousands of dollars in college tuition.

About 20 percent of the nearly 2.1 million students worldwide who took AP exams last spring performed at a sufficiently high level to earn an AP Scholar Award by completing 3 or more exams and earning grades of 3 or higher. Of the 670 individual York High School students who took an AP exam in 2012, 82 were so honored.

The National AP Scholars from York are Francesco Bertucci, Sean Connelly, Joseph Gaudio, Georgi Govedarov, Tessa Kroll, Ryan McDonough, Mariam Mirza, Ushasi Naha, Jacob Ruprecht, Hari Sreedhar, Kira Tebbe and Chloe Williams.

These 12 students took a total of 116 AP tests, earning top scores of 5 on 82 (or 70 percent) of them.
