Out with the new, in with the old at Wonderland Multivintage

During the holiday season when advertisers want to showcase the newest toys and latest gadgets, Jason Ostrowski will be selling the old and showcasing history.
Ostrowski, owner of Wonderland Multivintage in Brookfield, buys and sells vintage toys, antiques, advertisements and pretty much anything rare or unusual. Ostrowski said that sales-wise, he hopes to have a good holiday season. But trends are difficult to predict, and he doesn’t believe the tradition of Black Friday has much of an effect on his business.
“Black Friday, I find, doesn’t really apply to the small business side of things,” Ostrowski said. “Small businesses tend to do better the two weeks prior to Christmas, whereas Black Friday is more of a big retail (push) for new products.”
Some small businesses may be overlooked on Black Friday, but according to recent data supplied by American Express, there was a 23-percent increase in card-member transactions on Small Business Saturday last year.
Ostrowski said while several larger retailers are competing with each other when it comes to selling products, his business takes a different approach.
“I try to find products that don’t have a lot of competition, but I’m always looking for new customers, of course,” he said. “My business is different because I’m in antiques, so it’s not like I’m running big sales and commercials as much as just looking for more traffic.”
Ostrowski also said he will spotlight the best merchandise this holiday season and have a window display set up. After being open for five years, the avid collector said he has a large share of loyal customers, but gets new ones every day.
“I try and sell something for everybody,” he said. “My goal is to have something for every customer that walks in the door.”
