Morton coach Tony Martinucci knew if his team could find some bench production they would be dangerous. Against Lyons Township Antario Simon showed what Martinucci was talking about.
Simon scored 16 points off the bench to lead the Mustangs in a 76-61 win over the host Lions in the LT Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament on Friday. Simon shared the point lead with senior forward Waller Perez, who remained a threat despite being the focus of the Lions’ defense.
The Mustangs (1-1) struggled in a 66-50 loss to Fenwick in the season opener, but Perez’s supporting cast played better against LT.
“Fenwick triple teamed him the other day and limited his options,” Martinucci said. “He’s just gotta learn that everybody else has to shoot the ball so they can’t double team him.”
Morton definitely shot the ball well. Four first quarter threes built up a 22-8 Mustang lead. The lead ballooned to 29-13 before the Lions utilized a press to cut the lead to six at halftime.
Greg Carter (14 points) and Jarvis Cannon (12 points) gave the Mustangs four double figure scorers.
“It’s a relief when teams double me or triple that other people can step up on our team,” Perez said. “I like to see the spark that we have on our bench.”
LT (1-1) couldn’t sustain the pressure and the Mustangs opened the lead back up in the third quarter. Morton led 60-40 after three quarters.
“I was hoping that we weren’t going to have to extend our defense,” LT coach Tom Sloan said. “That wasn’t our plan, but they made several shots early and they shot the pretty darn well for most of the game. They definitely bounced back from their first game and they were ready to dish it out today.”
Matt Mrazek led the Lions with 14 points. Jarryd Heath had 12 and Chris O'Reilly scored 10.
