Felony car theft charges against Downers Grove men dropped
Charges have been dropped against the two Downers Grove men whom police say were found behind the wheel of a stolen car in Lemont this weekend.
Vidmantas Karla, 45, and Virginijus Karla, 25, both of the 1100 block of Woodcrest Lane, were arrested around 2 a.m. Sunday.
That night, Lemont police were conducting a roadside check near State Street and Archer Avenue. About 1:30 a.m., a black 2008 Land Rover approached and was directed into the checkpoint, Lemont Police Detective Aras Jonakis said.
According to officers, the Land Rover made a U-Turn and left the checkpoint without being screened. Officers pursued the vehicle and pulled it over about two blocks away.
Upon running the vehicle registration and VIN, officers found the registration had been stolen from a Naperville car dealership while the Land Rover had been reported stolen from a Northfield dealership eight months ago, Jonakis said.
Both men were charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, but the Will County State’s Attorney dropped the charges Monday, and the two the men were released, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.
Messages left with the state’s attorney’s office were not immediately returned Tuesday.
