Darien man charged following major pot bust
A Darien man and four others were charged with trafficking marijuana following a multi-department federal, state and county police sting that netted about 600 pounds of marijuana last week, according to media reports.
Dean A. Dziuba, 55, of the 1100 block of Lodgepole Court in Darien, was charged with marijuana trafficking, unlawful possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver and unlawful possession of marijuana.
The Drug Enforcement Administration, the DuPage County Metropolitan Enforcement Group, the North Central Narcotics Task Force, the Illinois State Police, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office concluded a three-month investigation into marijuana trafficking on Nov. 13 by stopping four vehicles enroute from Arizona to Illinois and seizing 598 pounds of marijuana, according to media reports.
Law enforcement personnel received information in September of a marijuana trafficking organization based out of Kane and McHenry counties. The organization allegedly was responsible for transporting hundreds of pounds of marijuana from Arizona to Illinois.
Over several days in November, agents conducted surveillance on the group of suspects as they traveled from Arizona back to Illinois. Agents followed the suspects who were traveling in four separate vehicles and on Nov. 13 conducted simultaneous traffic stops on the vehicles in Kane County.
Seven people were detained from stops in Sugar Grove and Aurora. A K-9 unit was called in and the marijuana was found in two of the cars, according to media reports.
Agents also searched two homes associated with the suspects in Elburn and Batavia. Five total people, including Dziuba, were charged with a variety of drug-related offenses.
Dziuba’s bond was reportedly set at $27 million.
