The annual “Saturday-After-Thanksgiving Concert” is back for a 21st helping of national champion guitarist Muriel Anderson of Nashville, returning to her hometown of Downers Grove joined by Howard Levy as special guest. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, in Downers Grove North High School Auditorium, 4436 N. Main St. A guitar workshop is planned the next day.
Anderson is also a renowned harp-guitarist, and Levy is a founding member of the Grammy winning Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He is regarded as one of the world’s most advanced diatonic harmonica players. A multi-instrumentalist, he’s also likely to play keyboard and mandolin, Anderson says.
Audiences also enjoy the family tradition of complimentary fresh baked refreshments, hot apple cider and a chance to win a Walden guitar donated by Tobias Music of Downers Grove.
“I’ve got a new piece I co-wrote with Beethoven,” Anderson divulges as a mini preview of what’s in store.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” she says about sharing the stage with Levy. “We talked about playing and recording together for a long time. He’s got some new material that is so amazing.”
Levy is one of the guest artists on Anderson’s latest recording project, set for release next year.
“It’s going to be a double album set: one album to go to sleep to and one to wake up to,” she says. “It’s called ‘Good Morning, Sweet Dreams.’”
The album will feature some vocal harmonies, but is primarily instrumental.
“I’m so excited about this album I can hardly stand myself,” she says. “I get to work with some of my favorite musicians and people in the whole world. Howard … falls into both those categories.”
Anderson says the Thanksgiving weekend concert has become a festive tradition in Downers Grove.
“The whole town has come together to help out,” she says. “My mother and my sister are still cooking their favorite homemade baked goods, and give them away at intermission. The mayor of Downers Grove (Martin Tully) will introduce the show. It’s really wonderful to come back home and get all the support from my community.”
Tickets cost $22 in advance for adults, $25 at door. For students and senior, tickets cost $15 in advance, or $17 at the door. For tickets, visit www.murielanderson.com or stop by Anderson’s Bookshop in Downers Grove or Naperville (www.andersonsbookshop.com).
Anderson will lead a guitar workshop at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at Two Way Street Coffee House, 1047 Curtiss St., Downers Grove. Tickets cost $22 at MurielAnderson.com, $25 at the door, and seating is limited.
The class will include material from Anderson’s “1-2-3 Fingerstyle Course,” plus giveaways from GHS Signature strings. She says she’ll also draw from her instructional DVD on “50 right hand techniques you must know.”
The event is supported by WDCB, Tobias Music and Maximum Printing. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Music for Life Alliance.
