It took 93 years, but Elmhurst College finally won a playoff game. The Bluejays traveled to Cedar Rapid, Iowa, to beat Coe College 27-24 on Saturday and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
This year, Elmhurst claimed a share of its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championship since the 1980 season, set a school record for victories in a season (10), and became the first football team in school history to be selected to the NCAA Playoffs.
Senior running back Scottie Williams, a Downers Grove South alum, was the offensive player of the year in the conference and ran for 196 yards and a touchdown in the playoff victory. The Bluejays (10-1) have now won seven games in a row.
Williams has set single-season school records in rushing yards (1,928), rushing touchdowns (21) and points scored (140). He holds career school records in the same categories.
Elmhurst will face the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in the second round at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Streaming audio and video will be available at elmhurstbluejays.com.
