Owner moves business to be closer to home

When Sheri Sauer was younger, she said her parents were taken advantage of by a crooked contractor — something that didn’t sit well with the La Grange Park resident. Something she wanted to make sure wouldn’t happen to others.
“I could not believe that this happened to them and it really made me realize that there should be people out there that do the right thing for homeowners and not take advantage of customers,” Sauer said.
Sauer, a 13-year business owner, recently brought her company Premier Design and Cabinetry from Indian Head Park to La Grange Park, where she lives and her three children attend Riverside Brookfield High School. The company is known for designing and installing everything from kitchens to bathrooms, laundry rooms, closets, offices, basements and bars.
“I love doing what I do,” Sauer said. “I design the kitchens and the bathrooms and help with color choices so that people can come here as a one-stop shop. They can buy what they need and want and have the assurance that they’re walking away with their dream project.”
One of the first steps Sauer takes is finding out what the customer’s budget is to ensure she doesn’t go over it and that the customer comes away with their dream project.
“It makes them feel more comfortable, and in addition when their project is done they’re happy to say, ‘I did this, it came within my budget and I’m happy with it,’” she said. “I don’t want anybody to ever second guess what they’ve done.”
Another important step is to go through a checklist with each customer, something Sauer referred to as “homework.” By going over a checklist of what the customer wants, it narrows down products and gives a more clear direction in how to put on the finishing touches.
“To just come out and measure and not have any kind of a direction isn’t going to help,” she said. “I like making sure that projects are set up for success.”
Premier Design and Cabinetry also promotes itself as a green company by choosing cabinets that are Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association-approved, which are built using low formaldehyde.
“The other part of being a green-conscious retailer is that when I do a project the old cabinetry and the old appliances get donated to Habitat for Humanity and they reuse them,” she said.
For Sauer, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing the end result and the look of bliss on a customer’s face.
“Most people have their project in their mind, but they have difficulty helping me see it,” she said. “I work hard to make sure they realize their dream. In the end, if I’ve created what they had envisioned, then I feel I have done my job.”
