WHAT TO WATCH
As far as coaching challenges go, Glenbard East coach Scott Miller has a very pleasant one to deal with. The Rams have 10 seniors back from last year and some talented newcomers entering the fold. Miller’s challenge will be to find the right mix on the court at all times.
Senior guards Tahron Harvey and Marvin Grant-Clark are the top returners. Grant-Clark signed a letter of intent to play at Division II Maryville University in St. Louis. Harvey is a third-year varsity point guard.
After that there are a number of players fighting for playing time. Big men Greg Ludwig and Brandon Havenga give Miller a pair of options inside. Other seniors Mike Kjeldsen, VicPatrick Harris, Mike Hansen and Danny Ryan could also see the floor. Juniors JaRon Hall and Javon York could step in and break the senior-heavy roster.
“I think we’ve got some versatility,” Miller said. “We’ve got some bigs that we can go inside to if need be, we’ve got some slashers, we’ve got some kids that can shoot the ball pretty well. I feel like we got the right pieces to the puzzle. Right now we’re just trying to put them together.”
Chemistry will be essential to the Rams’ success, but Miller said he has an unselfish group. East may not be as talented as the team that took third in state two years ago, but the Rams believe they can push for the DuPage Valley title.
“This is a group that’s won conference in the past,” Miller said. “That’s something that they want.”
As always the Rams will be kicking off the season with the District 87 Tournament. Later in the year East will compete in the newly expanded 32-team Proviso West Holiday Tournament.
