WHAT TO WATCH
To say that Glenbard South is inexperienced heading into the 2012-13 season might be a bit of an understatement.
The Raiders will have a lot of new faces pressed into duty this winter after not returning a single starter from a year ago.
“Obviously starting off,” said coach Wade Hardtke, “we have a pretty big learning curve. And we certainly don’t start off with a very easy route but it is a great opportunity for us to gain some experience.”
Senior Tim Marshall saw varsity time a year ago as did junior Chaun Rickette toward the end of the campaign. Those two, along with senior Jarius Shannon and juniors Alex Jeske, Mark Murbach and John Marks, will be a part of the rotation.
“I think for the most part, Rickette and Marshall will carry us,” the coach said. “But we do need to be pretty balanced.”
In addition to inexperience, Hardtke said his team is not as deep or big as recent squads. The season-opening District 87 tournament will show the Raiders where they stand. The Metro Suburban Conference, with favorite Riverside-Brookfield, Timothy Christian and Ridgewood as the heavyweights, will also bring challenges.
“I am cautiously optimistic because we have so many untested guys. Really the first few weeks when the dust settles, we will see where our pieces fit and try to build on that.”
