WHAT TO WATCH Addison Trail has never had big teams under coach Brendan Lyons, who enters his sixth year at the helm of the Blazers. This year’s group doesn’t have a lot of size either, but the Blazers are strong as they’ve been under Lyons in other areas to make up for it.

“We’ve not been blessed with the utmost of size here at all, but really the thing I like about some of the bigger guys we have is that we can all move and run,” Lyons said. “We have some athleticism so I think that’s going to allow us to do some different things.”

Third-year varsity guard James Pupillo is back after missing the second half of last season with an injury. Lyons has high hopes for Pupillo.

“We’re excited to have him back at full strength and I think his game has really progressed to the point where if he keeps doing what he’s doing he will be one of the better guards in the area,” Lyons said.

Seniors Jordan Garcia and Danny McLoughlin join Pupillo as returning starters. Behind those three is a bench that Lyons gushed about. He predicted that as many as 10-12 players could play each game.

“This is top to bottom the most talented group I’ve had,” he said. “We’re going to have to get contributions from a lot of different guys.”

The Blazers will have to play smart and controlled basketball to make up for their lack of interior size. Lyons thinks his team can pull it off.

“We feel like, all things going our way and us kind of building off what we’re doing, that we could find ourselves in that upper echelon of the conference, which would be a first for us in quite some time,” Lyons said.
