Alderman Steve Morley announces plan to run for Elmhurst mayor

Elmhurst Alderman Steve Morley officially announced his plan to run for mayor Monday in front of supporters at Wilder Mansion.

“This town is the focus of every aspect of my life,” Morley said. “As such, there is nothing more important to me than making sure this community provides a safe and secure atmosphere where children, families and businesses can grow and prosper.”

Morley said in a press release that his priorities as mayor would be “to provide Elmhurst with honorable representation that is committed to smart growth and development that protects the character and charm of our neighborhoods, representation that is committed to reducing the burden on our taxpayers and maintaining safe and secure streets.”

The group in attendance at the announcement included nine current Aldermen, members of the General Assembly, DuPage County Board and Forrest Preserve Commissioners as well as members of the local PTA boards and neighborhood organizations.

“I am honored to have such a large, diverse and energetic group of people supporting me and my campaign,” Morley said. “This is truly humbling.”

Fourth ward Alderman Kevin York spoke in support of Morley at the announcement.

“Steve is an advocate of a smaller, more efficient local government and I have observed him as he has encouraged city staff to think outside the box in how essential city services could be provided in a more economical manner,” he said.

Morley has served on the Elmhurst City Council representing the 6th Ward since his election in 2007. He was re-elected in 2011.

Current Mayor Pete DiCianni will soon vacate the post because of his election last week to the DuPage County Board.

Elmhurst Alderman Mark Mulliner has also announced a campaign for Elmhurst mayor.
