Athletic LT hopes to win regional
Lyons Township's fast team has risen expectations

With four key returners and an athletic group, Lyons Township is hoping for its best season under third-year coach Katie Meyers. Seniors Sara Beck and Ashanti Davis and juniors Kayla Morrissey and Victoria Swift were key contributors last winter and Meyers said it’s the most athletic team she’s seen at LT.
“We have a lot of speed, we have great scorers so we’re definitely going to focus on running the floor and attacking the basket,” Meyers said. “Those are our two main priorities. We want to be fast paced and we want to be an attacking team.”
How all that talent jells will be the key factor to the Lions’ success.
“This team cannot worry about individual stats because we’ve got a lot of great basketball players,” Meyers said. “They’ve got to get rid of the individual mentality and that alone is going to determine the outcome of the season.”
Davis’ size and athleticism at the guard spot allows her to take over games when she’s on. Her threat should create open opportunities for sharp shooters Swift and Morrissey.
For all the Lions’ returning experience it is still a young team. Swift will play a key role as a sophomore along with point guard Gaby Galassini, who will have big shoes to fill in replacing Colleen Connors.
Meyers said the minimum goal for LT is to win a regional and they should be battle-tested by the time the postseason rolls around. The West Suburban Silver is looking tough with Hinsdale Central improved, Glenbard West anchored by 6-foot-4 center Caitlin Soane and defending co-champs York and Proviso West strong again as well.
“The fact that we’re playing such high level basketball in our conference when it’s time to start regionals that level of competition hopefully will have paid off and we’ll advance farther in the regional tournament,” Meyers said.
