Lemont police charge homeless man with robbing Lemont National Bank

Lemont, IL

A man whom Lemont police say is homeless has been charged in the Tuesday robbery of the Lemont National Bank.

Gerald Tysko, 33, who does not have a current address, was charged for bank robbery and aggravated robbery Thursday afternoon. His bail was set at $250,000 and as of Thursday afternoon he was awaiting transfer to the Cook County Department of Corrections.

Tysko has a prior conviction for felony bank robbery and is considered a serial bank robber, according to Lemont Police Department Chief Kevin Shaughnessy.

“It was determined that the offender may have been responsible for an earlier bank robbery occurring in Chicago on Dec. 10,” Shaughnessy stated in a press release.

Around 4 a.m. Wednesday, the Lemont Police Department tracked Tysko to the Cloud Nine Motel, 8440 S. Harlem Ave. in Bridgeview, where he was taken into custody, the release states.

On Tuesday evening, Tysko entered the bank at 1201 State St. around 5 p.m. and handed a note to a bank teller, according to police. The note demanded money and implied that Tysko had a weapon, police said. The teller complied and Tysko fled the bank, Shaughnessy said. Police are not releasing the amount of money Tysko left the bank with.

“Employees of the Lemont National Bank recently received training from the FBI and Lemont Police concerning bank robberies,” Shaughnessy added in the release. “That training proved beneficial in the identification and apprehension of the offender.”

Units from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police and Cook County Forest Preserve Police assisted Lemont Police in searching the area after the robbery. The Federal Bureau of Investigation also assisted the Lemont Police Department.

Shaughnessy said no one was injured in the robbery and the suspect was not armed when taken into custody.

The bank resumed normal business hours on Wednesday morning.

Shaughnessy said the Lemont National Bank had never before been robbed.

The bank’s website is currently under construction, but according to www.faqs.org/banks, Lemont National Bank was established in 1901. The website also states that the bank’s assets total $6 million.
