NEWSMAKER Storm Styles, Intern at Porsche
Local scholar on the fast track
Storm Styles has been told she can learn something new every day, but never know everything about anything.
The Lemont native is living by that lesson during her internship at Porsche, where she is a human resources intern at the car company’s corporate Lisle location.
“I saw (this opportunity) and it attracted me because it was for a year and I thought it would be awesome to have a year of human resources in their department,” said Styles, a junior who is double majoring in psychology and human resources at North Central College. “It is a real, credible business and it attracted my eye.”
In her internship, Styles does everything from checking vacation requests, ordering supplies, and working on payroll, and she has also helped plan a couple events and benefits.
“I asked my career development counselor if this would be a good internship for me,” Styles said before she took the position. “I didn’t want to be getting coffee and bagels.”
What interested you in psychology and human resources?
Psychology was my primary major and I had a statistics class where my statistics teacher is an industrial psychologist He recruited me to his industrial psych class and I fell in love with it. He said industrial psych is very similar to human resources and I took a couple business classes and found out I liked human resources. I guess I am always interested in people, which is why I major in psychology.
What has been the best part of the internship?
I think my favorite thing I have helped with is recruitment. I go through resumes and choose applicants that I feel would be able to do the job they are looking for. I like doing that a lot. That’s something you talk about in class but don’t get a chance to do. I also got to help one of my supervisors organize how much a new employee would get paid. I think this will help me a lot because you learn how everyone is an individual and how that individual will fit into the organization as far as compensation, skills and ability.
Did the cars attract you to intern at Porsche?
It was definitely the HR opportunity. I had heard of Porsche but I don’t know that much about cars. I have learned how prestigious Porsche is and they are from Germany and very proud of their culture.
What does the future look like for you?
I am staying on this internship for the next year. I will be a senior next year and am hoping I can find another internship to get involved with and get experience and have an edge in the job market. I am not hesitant to go into human resources because it’s not that big of a field and it’s growing and they are hiring people.
“Storm Styles” — that’s a very unique name, what’s the story behind that?
My parents wanted to give their children unique names. When my mom was growing up there were a lot of ‘Christies.’ I think they wanted us to be the only person with the name. A lot of people ask if that is my real name and ask to see my driver’s license.
