Fire crews remove chemical vapors at plant

Geneva, IL

No injuries were reported in a Tuesday fire at the Curwood-Bemis plant, 475 N. Kirk Road in Batavia.

Batavia fire crews responded to the scene at about 1:39 p.m. and had the situation under control by 2 p.m.

The fire originated in a machine and was extinguished by the plant’s fire suppression system by the time emergency personnel arrived. On scene, firefighters removed lingering smoke and chemical vapors from the affected areas — the fire was in a room that used chemical acetone and heat to bond layers of plastic.

The company makes packaging for food products. The fire caused about $10,000 in damage, and the cause is still under investigation.
