Firefighters battled a blaze for about four hours on Thanksgiving at the River Hills Cemetery crematory building.
The fire destroyed the 50-foot by 50-foot crematory and was apparently caused while a body was being cremated, officials said. Authorities added that the official cause did not appear to be suspicious and was still under investigation.
Damage is estimated at $550,000. The call to the fire came at noon and seven engines, one truck were used as 32 firefighters from Batavia, St. Charles, North Aurora and Fermilab isolated gas and electric lines and eventually gained control of the fire.
A section of Route 25 was temporarily closed and a nearby Burlington railroad line was shut down during the blaze.
